The Holy Science by Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri:

If you haven’t read The Holy Science, because you find it a bit daunting, then be daunted no more! Sure, there are parts which by comparison make string theory seem simple, but there is plenty that’s enjoyable and relatively easy to digest, especially when paired with The Great Year, as we will explain.

Swami Sri Yukteswar (1855 – 1936), was Paramahansa Yogananda’s guru. He was a Jnanavatar – an incarnation of wisdom. He was also an astrologer. You only have to look at his picture on the cover of his book, to understand why Yogananda said of him, “There was naught of the vague or daft visionary about him”. In 1894 Mahavatar Babaji commissioned Sri Yukteswar to write this book, (first published in French), to point out the harmony underlying all religions. Babaji doesn’t commission just anyone to write books – enough said. There will never be a book like this again; it is thoroughly unique.

There is so much within the book that it is difficult to select any one topic, however, perhaps the most well known is Sri Yukteswar’s incredible explanation of the yugas; the vast recurring cycles of civilization. Groundbreaking, and far ahead of its time in 1894, Sri Yukteswar’s writings have recently become the subject of growing scientific interest as astronomers and astrophysicists try to prove his far reaching work. Knowledge of the yugas is as necessary for our understanding of what is happening in the world today, as our comprehension of the law of karma is to our understanding what happens to ourselves. It is that fundamental.  All this is written in less than 100 pages…perhaps Sri Yukteswar saw that attention spans would get shorter and that books would eventually be read on Kindles and Iphones!
